About These Stories

Do you feel nervous about reading a novel in English? Perhaps you feel that it’s too difficult? Don’t worry, so do many students,

A novel is much longer than the texts in your English coursebook. The plot and characters in a novel are complex. Bur take heart. Short stories are casier to read than a novel. A short story moves forward more quickly. There is more action and less description, You can understand more easily what is going on.

This collection of short stories has been put together to help you enjoy reading in English. There are six stories in

total. Each one is equally interesting and full of mystery

Mystery stories have always been popular. They take you into an imaginary world, away from everyday life. A good mystery story is interesting and unusual, and makes you think. You want to find out what happens next. But the only way is to continue reading. So mystery stories are a good way to develop your reading skills.

The six stories in this book are adaptations of classic mystery stories. They are all different, but they have one thing in common. Their authors were experts at telling a story. The plots are strong and easy to follow. Some stories were written before people had electric light, only candles. There were no computers, e-mail or mobile phones. But although the stories are not modern, they still relate to life today.

These six stories are fiction but they take place in the real world. They are about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. The first story, The Magic Seat, is about a father who takes his little boy into a shop, just as any father might do. But the shop is no ordinary shop. At first it seems attractive, but later it becomes frightening. The story shows there is a huge difference between how things seem to be, and how they really are.

Two of the stories, The Monkey’s Paw and The Truth Abod Parra, have a clear message. This message is “Be careful what you wish for because you may receive it.” One story illustrates this in a humorous way. The other story is very tragic. It warns us that we should be happy with our lives and not try to change them.

The story of Tobermory, about a cat that learns to talk, is also humorous. But again, there is a hidden warning, We might think it would be wonderful if animals could talk. But perhaps it is better for them to remain silent!

Number 13 and Ob, Whistle and W Come to You are famous ghost stories. Both of them describe what happens to people staying in hotels away from home. They are written in a way that makes them very real. We identify with the main character in each story. We share his feelings. We ask ourselves how we would behave in the same situation. How would we feel? What would we do?

Not everything in these six stories is explained. But that is why they are so appealing. They remain that is why we like them. mysteries. And

Enjoy!
